The Old Testament gives multiple examples of blessing for those who studied and followed the Law. Psalm 1 presents one of these examples and begins, “Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night”(Psalm 1:1-2). Ezra is another example: “The good hand of his God was on him. For Ezra had set his heart to study the Law of the LORD, and to do it and to teach his statutes and rules in Israel”(Ezra 7:9b-10).
Psalm 119:1-16 clarifies for us again the qualities which will help us to be blessed, free from shame, and pure: “Blessed are those whose way is blameless, who walk in the law of the LORD! Blessed are those who keep his testimonies, who seek him with their whole heart, who also do no wrong, but walk in his ways! You have commanded your precepts to be kept diligently. Oh that my ways may be steadfast in keeping your statutes! Then I shall not be put to shame, having my eyes fixed on all your commandments. I will praise you with an upright heart, when I learn your righteous rules. I will keep your statutes; do not utterly forsake me! How can a young man keep his way pure? By guarding it according to your word. With my whole heart I seek you; let me not wander from your commandments! I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you. Blessed are you, O LORD; teach me your statutes! With my lips I declare all the rules of your mouth. In the way of your testimonies I delight as much as in all riches. I will meditate on your precepts and fix my eyes on your ways. I will delight in your statutes; I will not forget your word.” The remainder of Psalm 119 contemplates the Word of God and praises God for it.
Although we are not under Old Testament law, the Old Testament teaches us much about God and man. We have the benefit of the New Testament, as well, still applicable 2000 years later.
You may hesitate to study the Word of God because you doubt your ability to understand it, but remember that he gave it to us to be understood and followed. You can do this! And accurate interpretation and humble application of God’s Word are vital for your spiritual growth and for the glory of God. “Him we proclaim, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all wisdom, that we may present everyone mature in Christ”(Colossians 1:28).
